I designed this lesson for a peer teaching assignment in my literature methods class. ​I centered the lesson around the poem timeless by Rupi Kaur. She is one of my favorite modern poets, and I think her work is great to expose students to because she is young and rose to fame on social media by sharing her short, visual poems. I also wanted to introduce an idea I have called Poet Corner – where students would be introduced to a new poet each month or genre of poetry, and it would be incorporated into our current unit. My goal was for students to walk away with a better understanding of the gender lens, and also feel more confident analyzing poetry. I wanted them to come away from this lesson with an appreciation for poetry and excitement for young poets.
